VNA Offers Program for Caregivers
7/30/2010

Caring for an older adult with stroke, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s disease or other long-term conditions can be very stressful. Research shows that caregivers are at high risk for depression and stress-related illnesses. To help minimize these risks, a program – "Powerful Tools for Caregivers" – is being offered by Visiting Nurses Association of Rockford to give caregivers the skills they need to take care of themselves and to feel more confident in the care they provide.

The FREE class session will be held:

Wednesdays, September 1 through October 6

5 to 7 p.m.

VNA office, 4223 E. State Street, Rockford

Participants develop their own personalized action plans as they cover a variety of topics, including tools to:

· Help reduce stress,

· Communicate effectively with family members, doctors, and paid staff,

· Take care of yourself,

· Reduce guilt, anger and depression,

· Help you relax,

· Make tough decisions, and

· Set goals and problem-solve.

Teachers are Nancy Lindgren, R.N., and Dina Hanstad, B.S., both care coordinators with Visiting Nurses Association Older Adult Care.

To register for the class, call Visiting Nurses Association at (815) 971-3502.
